Waseca Learning Environment

...serving a diverse community for over a decade

the Past: A Foundation

Waseca opened its doors in 1993 with the intention of offering a Montessori education to the children of families who valued independent learning and a holistic approach to education. Over the years, Waseca has written grants, pursued federal and state funding, and created a mail-order business in order to allow low-income families to participate in a community centered around the needs of the child.

A curriculum has been created teaching geography according to natural boundaries called biomes and shared with Montessori schools across the country. Sustainability in daily practice has been modeled with recycling, composting, and the use of cloth diapers.

A nutritional food program has been implemented with organic produce, vegan and vegetarian alternatives, and a menu that encourages children to explore new tastes and healthy choices. Gardens and livestock have been maintained so that children know where food comes from.
Festivals and rituals have been established that have given the Waseca Community a sense of belonging.
